This was a deadline filled with a lot of action that happened at the last moment possible. I didn’t finish recording all of these deals until almost an hour after the 4 pm deadline. So many deals happened right before the deadline and I don’t think the fans would have it any other way.
The Astros are definitely the biggest winners of this deadline as they went out and got what they needed to contend for the World Series. I honestly don’t know who in the American League is going to stand in their way with their upgraded pitching rotation. The Yankees didn’t make a move and it’s going to hurt them down the stretch and into the postseason.
The NL East just got even more exciting as the Nationals and Braves both boosted their rosters by each making several moves. The Nationals boosted their bullpen, filling their biggest need. The Braves bullpen got better too with the additions of Shane Greene, Chris Martin, and Mark Melancon. These moves made the Braves the clear winners of the NL East but the Nationals increased their odds to make the playoffs as a wild card contender.
The Yankees and Dodgers lost this deadline as neither made a deal of any significance what so ever. The Yankees needed a starter but didn’t come through. The Dodgers needed bullpen support but didn’t come through. Both fan bases won’t be happy about their teams performance today. It’s going to hurt them too as these are holes in their roster that need to be filled if they want to win a world series.
The Giants are losers of this deadline as well and I don’t think anyone has a clue what this team is doing. The Giants are postseason contenders but they are not contenders for the world series. They have too many holes in their roster despite their recent success and Farhan Zaidi let it get the best of him. He should’ve cashed in and built up his farm system but instead he made a few small moves making fans question what direction the organization is headed in.
This was an amazing trade deadline to witness and it is going to have a huge impact on how the rest of the season plays out. The Astros solidified themselves as world series contenders while the Yankees and Dodgers watched from the sideline. Let’s not leave the Mets out of the conversation either as they seem to now be making a push for contention after acquiring Marcus Stroman and not selling any valuable pieces. The remainder of the season is going to be an exciting one with more teams joining the world series race and it’s anyone guess as to who is going to bring home the title.
This article will continue to be updated as new information about these deals becomes available.
